always get me down? Not a chance. Not even when they coincide as they did today. Grey skies, wind and rain. And still the temperature stayed around 10 degrees. Amazingly, it doesn't change. Well, it does, it goes down a little.
For the immature
This, um, thing, was in the kids' playground just down the road from where we stayed in Westport. It actually looked worse from behind, ahem, but the fence spoiled the shot. We're not sure what it is, or what it's for and we didn't see any kids on it. No further commentary necessary.
Some lake somewhere
OK, Jayne was too slow getting me the name. She's spelling it now, but I've lost interest. The lake appears from nowhere amid rising cliffs on either side. It also happens to be on one of those Irish undulating roads that is too narrow to pass another car, let alone the bus we got caught behind. The bus got caught by a car parked on the road side and let us pass. The shot of lake is hurried because I wanted to stay in front of the bus and because there was a howling wind and drizzle.
Kylemore Abbey
This place was on the edge of a lake in the middle of nowhere. No, that's unfair, it was in the middle of a cloud. It was originally built as a castle in 1867 and there is a beautifully tragic love story that goes with it, I can't believe Hollywood hasn't heard about it. It is a movie waiting to happen.
The property was purchased by the Benedictine Nuns, thankfully, otherwise it would be a derelict ruin like so many other places across the country. There is also a gothic style church.
As I said, this is a Hollywood story, the church was built for the use of those who lived and visited the house. We've always thought it would be cool to live within walking distance of church. Having the money to build your own church ... totally awesome.
And it is complete with a stained glass window.
Of course, if you have enough money for a castle and a church, then you can certainly build your own walled garden. Sadly, of all the parts of the estate, it was the garden that was allowed to go to ruin. It would have been a marvel in it's day with glass houses to produce food for the household. But, that's what happens when you allow American new money (oil) to buy a castle and give it as a wedding gift when your daughter who marries an English Duke. He gambled - badly. I'm sure the authorities have rules today to ensure such an unholy marriage can never happen again, or at least they won't be able to buy such a beautiful property.
And so, we are safely ensconced in Galway.
